Prof. Mohanty has been an active mentor of various educational institutes across different levels in the various states of India including Odisha and Madhya Pradesh for last couple of decades. He actively nurtures students, teachers, and junior faculty starting from the secondary school to doctoral institutes.
Prof. Mohanty has initiated excellence awards in 2009 for top performing high school students in rural India with his undying urge to tap the talents of students of remote villages. Prof. Mohanty has institutionalized an award called "Saraju-Uma Excellence Award" which is awarded to high-school topper of Lodhachua gram panchayat (i.e. village council) every year, based on the student's performance in state-level high-school board examination (i.e. Odisha Board of Secondary Education Examination).
In the year 2017, Prof. Mohanty built a state-of-art computing facility called "Saraju-Uma Dahikhai Computing Center" for computer training of rural population of Odisha. The computing center located at Lodhachua, Odisha has been engaged in training students from grade 8 to grade 12.
Prof. Mohanty has been one of the primary forces to get approval of the Government funds for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IIT Bhubaneswar). Prof. Mohanty has also been one of the front runners and mentors of the International Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar (IIIT Bhubaneswar). He has also been instrumental to have memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the University of North Texas (UNT) for international collaboration on research and educational activities. Prof. Mohanty has been an active promoter of the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar (CETB).
As a primary motivator of the International Conference on Information Technology (ICIT) for Orissa Information Technology Society (OITS), Prof. Mohanty has been involved in organizing through technical co-sponsorship of IEEE at various Institutes of Odisha including Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB University), ITER Bhubaneswar, and IIIT Bhubaneswar. ICIT, which was initiated in 1996, is considered as one of the earliest IT conferences in India when IT was almost non-existent in the eastern part of India.
Prof. Mohanty has been contributing immensely to the growth of science and technology in the state of Madhya Pradesh by guiding public and private institutes alike for promotion of academic activities and by mentoring faculty and students. Specifically, he has been helping various institutes of Madhya Pradesh to benefit faculty as well as students in terms of scientific knowledge and international exposure.
