Project Scope

The goal of this project is develop an off-the shelf component based IoMT enabled medical training framework, Easy-Med, to train STEM students with sensing, security, and privacy-aspects of smart healthcare and provide them a career path in smart healthcare.

The phenomenon of a network of interconnected devices, called the Internet of Things (IoT), is the backbone of today’s connected world. An IoT-based framework for the healthcare industry, is called the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). It is a significant application of smart cities and is expected to be a US $136.8 Billion industry by the year 2021. With 3.7 million connected devices in 2018, the smart healthcare industry is estimated to contribute up to 30% of the world’s stored data. The potential career opportunities provided by the expansion of the smart healthcare industry is expected to increase at a faster pace than the traditional training approach can accommodate. The knowledge gap between the designers of these frameworks and their users increases the vulnerability of these connected medical devices, which in turn reduces the effectiveness of these frameworks. This project, Easy-Med, helps in addressing these challenges and in preparing the future workforce.

The healthcare industry is estimated to contribute up to 30% of the world’s stored data. About 80 megabytes of imaging and electronic medical record (EMR) data are generated for each patient each year. The amount of healthcare data produced more than doubles each year and is expected to reach a trillion gigabytes soon. The main challenges for building Security, Privacy-Assured IoMT frameworks that Easy-Med project handles include the following: (a) the shear amount of healthcare data created by the ever-increasing number of sensing devices and applications, (b) vulnerability to security threats and privacy issues increases with the number of devices connected to the internet, (c) security features of existing IoMT frameworks are not fully utilized by the users, and (d) the knowledge gap between the designers of IoMT frameworks and the end users limits the effectiveness of the IoMT frameworks.
